CBD and alcohol: interactions, risks & use

CBD and alcohol – a common and important question. Both substances act on the nervous system, and their combination carries both risks and potential benefits. We explain what to look out for.

The interaction between CBD and alcohol

One of the most common questions: may you combine CBD and alcohol? The answer is nuanced. Both substances act on the central nervous system, but in different ways. Taking them at the same time can strengthen effects – both positive and negative ones.

How CBD works in the body

CBD is broken down in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes. Alcohol partly uses the same enzymes. Taken at the same time, the breakdown slows down, which can strengthen both effects.

A stronger sedative effect

Alcohol has a sedative effect and CBD a calming one. In combination this can lead to more tiredness, dizziness and problems with coordination. Anyone who combines CBD and alcohol should start with low amounts of both substances.

What current discussions mention

A discussion carried out in 1979 mentioned that the combination of CBD and alcohol led to lower blood alcohol levels than alcohol alone. These results are not clear-cut, however – newer studies are largely missing.

CBD against a hangover

Many users take CBD after drinking alcohol against hangover symptoms such as nausea, headaches and mood swings. CBD can reduce nausea and calm the autonomic nervous system – although it is no scientific cure for the hangover.

A gap in time makes sense

If you take CBD for a specific purpose (against sleep problems or anxiety, for instance), it makes sense to keep at least 2-4 hours between it and drinking alcohol. That way both effects stay clearly separate and unwanted reinforcement is avoided.

Interactions with medicines

Anyone taking medicines should be particularly careful. CBD and alcohol can both influence the effect of medicines – medical coordination is recommended.

CBD during alcohol withdrawal

First studies suggest that CBD could have a supporting effect with alcohol dependence: reducing craving, accompanying withdrawal symptoms and protecting the liver. The research is still at an early stage, but promising.

Enjoying Swiss premium CBD responsibly

High-grade Swiss CBD products with a clear cannabinoid concentration make controlled use possible. With a responsible approach to alcohol and CBD, both can exist side by side – if you know the interactions.
