CBD, anxiety and mood

A review paper surveys the animal studies on CBD in anxiety and depression and describes where in the brain it acts.

What was investigated

Five researchers from Sweden and Italy have collected the preclinical literature on CBD in anxiety and mood disorders: behavioural animal experiments, together with the pharmacological work on the targets in the brain — the serotonin 1A receptor, the TRPV channels and the enzyme that breaks down anandamide. A third part follows epigenetic traces: DNA methylation, histones, microRNA.

What was found

The animal studies surveyed describe anxiolytic and antidepressant effects, and the authors are able to connect them to the molecular targets at several points. How CBD works in detail is not thereby settled: the precise mechanism of action, they write, remains unknown.

What the study does not show

The paper is explicitly preclinical — it evaluates animal experiments and laboratory findings, not investigations in humans. Nothing can be derived from it for use in humans; the authors call CBD a promising candidate, no more.
