Can dogs tolerate CBD?

Yes, dogs have an endocannabinoid system similar to that of humans. They react to cannabidiol comparably, but are more sensitive and need considerably lower doses. Important: dogs must never be given THC – it is poisonous for them.

With which complaints does CBD help dogs?

Separation anxiety and stress

Many dogs suffer from a fear of noise (New Year, thunderstorms) or from separation anxiety. Cannabidiol can calm the nervous system without leaving the animal sedated.

Joint problems in older dogs

With osteoarthritis and hip dysplasia, studies by Cornell University show that the substance can ease pain and improve mobility. The quality of life of older dogs rises measurably.

Epilepsy

With dogs that have seizures, cannabidiol can make sense as a complementary therapy. A study by Colorado State University showed a reduction in the frequency of seizures of about a third.

Skin conditions

With itchy skin problems and hot spots, topical CBD oil can work locally. Taken internally it also stabilises the condition of the skin.

The right dose for dogs

The rule of thumb is: 0,1 to 0,5 mg of cannabidiol per kilogram of body weight. A dog weighing 10 kg therefore needs 1 to 5 mg per day. Start at the lower end and increase slowly, in the same way as with humans.

An example dose by weight

A small dog (5 kg): 0,5 to 2,5 mg per day
A medium dog (15 kg): 1,5 to 7,5 mg per day
A large dog (30 kg): 3 to 15 mg per day

What to look for when buying?

Choose exclusively oils designed specially for animals without additives such as xylitol (poisonous for dogs). Look for organic certification and a current laboratory certificate. Side effects and safety

In rare cases dogs can show light diarrhoea, tiredness or a dry mouth. In that case reduce the dose. With sick animals or those on medication, always ask the vet first.

The different forms for dogs

Besides the classic oil there are also special dog treats with cannabidiol, capsules and pastes. Treats are ideal for fussy animals that do not like the oil directly. The effect does set in somewhat later, however, because the active substance first has to pass through the digestion. Oil remains the fastest form and the easiest to dose. With very anxious dogs, giving it directly into the mouth is often difficult – here treats are the more practical alternative.

How do I integrate CBD into a dog’s day?

It is best to spread the daily dose over two to three servings, ideally at mealtimes. A dog with separation anxiety gets a serving 30 minutes before you leave the house. At New Year or during a thunderstorm you begin an hour before the stress. With chronic complaints such as osteoarthritis, a constant daily dose over weeks makes sense in order to experience the full effect. Watch your four-legged friend attentively and adjust the amount after 5 to 7 days.

What do vets say?

More and more vets in Switzerland are open to complementary uses with cannabidiol, above all with older dogs in pain. As the substance is not yet officially approved for animals, however, many advise careful use and close observation. A list of studies accompanied by vets is growing steadily – science is catching up.
